Merino - Nature's Miracle Fibre
Merino is called nature's miracle fibre because it's soft, naturally regulates temperature, wicks away moisture, resists odor, and is fully biodegradable. No other fibre offers such a unique combination of comfort, performance, and sustainability.
Merino fibres are measured in microns - A micron is a unit of measurement used to describe things that are extremely small - especially the thickness of fibres like wool. One micron is one millionth of a metre. For context, a human hair is about 60-100 microns thick, while fine merino wool fibres are usually between 17 and 23 microns. The lower the micron number, the finer and softer the wool feels against your skin.
What We Blend With Our Merino
Our Merino Fusion range pairs the natural performance of merino with carefully selected fibres to get the best out of every piece. Depending on the garment, we blend merino with Cotton, Tencel, or Trevira - each used individually to suit the purpose of the product.
| Fabric | Why We Use It |
| Cotton | Adds breathability, softness, and everyday durability while keeping the fabric natural and easy to wear. |
| Tencel™ | Enhances moisture management, breathability, and a smooth, cool handfeel with excellent drape. |
| Trevira® | Improves shape retention, strength, and resilience, with good wrinkle resistance and long-lasting structure. |
How To Care For Your Merino
Wool is naturally hardworking - just like the people who wear Swanndri. With the right care, your merino will keep performing season after season. Here's how to make sure it goes the distance.
Wash Less. Wear More
- Merino's natural resistance to odour means it doesn't need washing after every wear.
- Air your garment between uses to keep it fresh - a bit of New Zealand breeze works wonders.
- Spot clean minor marks rather than washing the whole piece.
- As a general guide, wash after every few wears, depending on use.
Washing your Swanndri Merino
- Close all zips and turn your garment inside out before washing.
- Choose a wool or delicate cycle using cool water (below 30°C).
- Use a ideally wool detergent or powder without enzymes or optical brighteners.
- Do not use fabric softeners, bleach, soaking or harsh stain removers.
- Always follow the specific care label on your garment.
Drying Your Merino
- Never tumble dry - heat and agitation can shrink or distort the knit.
- Line dry or lay flat in the shade as soon as the wash is finished.
- Keep printed designs out of direct heat and do not iron over prints.
Repairs & Wear Over Time
- Merino knitwear can develop small holes with heavy use - this is natural.
- Mend any small holes early to prevent them from spreading.
- Cuffs and high-wear areas may need attention; repairing extends the garment's life.
